Go Flex Home - double check before I start! (no replies)

I need to move my website as my hosting fees are coming up and I don't want to pay someone else anymore. I have a go flex home, I have logged in via putty and root access and looked around a it. I tried to easily setup an virtual host and start the hhtpd service but this didn't work for me. I found this site and it looks more involved to do my goal...however I am up for it. I currently have data on drive that I don't want to lose...it's backed up on DVDs, but would take a while to redo...so if I can keep the dlna functionality of the go flex while running a web server to move my site to that would be great...all without losing access to my data. So is this possible? I read on another post a poster bricked their go flex possibly because it ad an old kernel or something? Is there a way to check my go flex before I get started to see if the hardware is ok for the mods? I'm assuming I need to run Debian off a USB drive and boot there and install apache etc to run the web server...do I have this correct? Also, do I need some sort of serial cable to make this happen?
