life-extension for Actiontec MI424RW Rev I router (no replies)

Looking all over for good info on the Actiontec MI424RW Rev I, and while there wasn't much love shown to this unit, I was hoping to use it as an AP or backup router. My home has a foil-faced sheathing that blocks the wifi signal, and I found that putting an AP in my garage with a powerline ethernet extender kit works great. This is how I was keeping my doorbell cam and another cam connected. But that $15 no-name AP died. I've got it covered with an even older router for now.

I know it's running U-Boot, and OpenRG, but I'm hesitant to go forward. I used info from this site years ago to put Arch Linux ARM on a pair of bargain-bin GoFlex Net's and was hoping to leverage it to put DD-WRT or OpenWRT on this router, but nobody has checked in with any good guides for doing it, at least to this revision of the router. Most info is related to the "jungo" bootloader on earlier revisions. I don't care about keeping the coax interface, I'm just pleased it has USB3 and has two radios. Oh, and a UART serial port with pins.

Thanks.

Dave

Embedian on Zyxel NSA325v2 ? (no replies)

Hi,
looooong time agou i flashed on my seagate devices some kind of emergeny debian environment in the on Board nand flash, because the original software was totaly useless anyway....

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,72

Now i got a NSA325v2 on my desk which I equepped with custom u-boot and you fabulous debian and linxu-kernel (great work, really appreciated!)

But I wonder... can I also flash some kind of emergency boot on the nand device on the nsa325? Though, the original Soft is not as useless as the seagate ones were...

Wishlist: Kernel with XFRM (transform interfaces support?) (no replies)

Hi,

I just installed thelatest kernel from you on my Zyxel NSA325v2

Linux zyxxy2 5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1 #1.0 PREEMPT Sat Dec 5 14:05:39 PST 2020 armv5tel GNU/Linux

but I reconed that XFRM interfaces aren't compiled in the kernel :-( (see screenshot, which I have now marked as module)

root@zyxxy2:/usr/src# ip link add xfrm3 type xfrm dev eth0 if_id 0x123
Error: Unknown device type.
root@zyxxy2:/usr/src# uname -a
Linux zyxxy2 5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1 #1.0 PREEMPT Sat Dec 5 14:05:39 PST 2020 armv5tel GNU/Linux
root@zyxxy2:/usr/src#

Would it break something else if you enable this in your kernel config?
xtrm Interfaces are used for strongswan as tunnel interfaces, which make lots of thing much easier than vti interfaces - since the marvell cpu has a build in crypto-engine, that option should make a lot of sense, I think:-)

Dear Friends,

Whenever i setup everything and try to download in Debian i am getting this error

ERROR: The certificate of ' domain name' is not trusted.
ERROR: The certificate of ' domain name' doesn't have a known issuer.

Till these days i was downloading from a different server and tried to copy to my debian Box.

Today, i thought let me ask the community for a solution.

Does https not supported on Debian 5.2.9 ?

I am running 5.2.9 on a PogoPlug V4.

And now i dont really know how to proceed, it feels like im missing something? I think i also would like to flash a new U-boot for it since its well a heap of poo right now, but am i correct that you need a booted kernel on the device to be able to actually flash a new U-boot? Or have i compleatly missread the guide somehow?

Thanks ALOT in advance this ha been a good practice so far

PogoPlug E02 install to NAND (no replies)

Sorry to bring an old thread back but its a Xmas holiday project :)

I've got my Pogoplug E02 up and running from the USB stick, but I can't for the life of me get it to flash to the NAND on the Pogoplug.

I'm not a Linux Noob but I would not call myself advanced, so at least I dont fear the CLI..

I've been following the thread - Linux Kernel 5.9.12 Kirkwood package and Debian rootfs (Thank you Bodhi for this!)

My attempts so far have resulted in a Pogoplug that rapidly flashes the LED Green then the LED rapidly flashes RED on boot without the Debian USB stick in place so I 'm sure its the process to flah the NAND that 'm getting wrong. Its not getting as far as being up and running.
Can anyone point me to a suitable thread with simple instructions so I cn atry and check what fiels should be in the flash memory or not??

Is it even possibel to do it on the memory the E02 has?

I'm also not sure what the U-Boot is on it, how can I tell what son the box itself? I flashed oit years ago and it has Arch on it., but I never used Arch and I'm slightly more conforable in Debian, and as I said its an Xmas project, so I wanted to update it and get it back to some form of usefullness...

Thanks in advance..

Pogoplug E04 not booting from SD Card or USB (4 replies)

I followed this link to be able to boot my old Pogoplug EO4 from either an SD card or USB:
Qnology PogoPlug Booting from SD

All appears to be OK except it always keeps booting into the Popoplug. When I ssh into the device it is always the Pogoplug kernel.

I tried different SanDisk SD cards and USB sticks to no avail, it always only boots to the Pogoplug.

I used screen and booted a second time to capture the log file and the weird thing is alarm was loaded. I could login to the alarm kernel over serial (alarm, alarm), and at the same time I could ssh into the Pogoplug device as root and my root password.

I read through the posts here since the above link seems to be dead for sometime now and I saw a post from bodhi about the rootfs not being mounted properly.

I then logged into Linux mint as root and recreated my ArchLinux rootfs card. I plugged the SD card back into my Pogoplug and rebooted. It behaves differently and still wont boot into ArchLinux on the SD card.

If you look at the console log, it appears to all be working fine, but its not loading. Looking at the second console log after using the SD card from Linux mint, it appears as though it can't find the image, but it still loads. It also tries to load ArchLinux but hangs partway through.

At this point I'm wondering if the ArchLinux version is simply too new for the Pogoplug hardware and should I be trying to load an older version?
Here is my first serial console output:

How to run a python script at reboot? (2 replies)

I am using debian on a dockstar.

Linux dockstar 5.5.1-kirkwood-tld-1 #1.0 PREEMPT Sat Feb 1 22:28:36 PST 2020 armv5tel GNU/Linux

What is the easiest (and clean) way if I want to run a python script at reboot? I have tried editing /etc/rc.local but that did not seem to work.

Thanks.

I'm intrigued to learn Wal Mart has some items I used to have to get from Best Buy on sale lol.
My limit is $50 this time but I can either get a WD or Seagate Backup plus I think.

While I'm at it, is there a day of the week Wal Mart sets the prices? You would think pretty soon the after-X-mas season sales should be warming up. When Best Buy was here I'd be up late Saturday nights waiting for the flyer, and that set the prices until the next week.

Last of the bigtime spenders here lol

Doozan Debian on Checkpoint L-50 (W)? (1 reply)

Hi,

since, this is also a Marvel Kirkwood based device with 512 MB Ram I wonder if someone has tried to put Debian on it as well:

https://openwrt.org/inbox/toh/check_point/check_point_l-50

I got that rather cheap and - as a router - OpenWRT will do more than fine, but, being just curious, a full Debian System would be a nice option as well :-)

Currently, it is not in my hands yet, but I hope it arrives before next weekend:-)

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Well...

I dusted-off my Goflex Home about a month ago. Got everything up and running via a USB drive. It is currently booted via USB running Debian. It didn't have enough RAM to run OMV very well, so I bought a Goflex Net. I was trying to get uboot updated via TFTP. I loaded the uboot image correctly to offset 0x640000 , but apparently reversed the nand write parameters, and tried to write the current uboot to 0x6400000, instead of the other way around. I started with nand erase 0x0 0x80000 .

After my first blunder, I figured I'd reboot and start over, forgetting that the current uboot is bad. I have tried kwboot, but I get "xmodem: Bad message". My main question is: Is using kwboot an exercise in futility at this point? Is it even possible to boot over serial without a working uboot?

If it is possible, then my second question is: What settings do I need to run it?

I have tried both with and without '-p' . I have tried specifying a baud rate of 115200, and tried not specifying any baud rate. I am using Bohdi's image from the first sticky.

I have had this problem for years and after a lot of reading, I still can't find a solution.

I am current use Linux debian 5.5.1-kirkwood-tld-1 #1.0 PREEMPT Sat Feb 1 22:28:36 PST 2020 armv5tel GNU/Linux. I have both ethernet and usb wifi plugin. Here is my /etc/network/interfaces looks like:

auto lo eth0
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.100.152
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        network 192.168.100.0
        broadcast 192.168.100.255
        gateway 192.168.100.1

allow-hotplug wlxxxxxxxxxxxxx
auto wlxxxxxxxxxxxxx
iface wlxxxxxxxxxxxxx inet static
	address 192.168.100.153
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        network 192.168.100.0
        broadcast 192.168.100.255
        gateway 192.168.100.1
	wpa-ssid myrouter
	wpa-psk xxxxxxxxx

After booting, both wired and wifi connections are pingable and work. However, if I disconnect ethernet, I will also lose wifi (not pingable all together). Wifi comes back if I re-plug ethernet. I have tried to reboot with just wifi pluged in and ehternet disconnected, but then I never got wifi to work or was able to login to see what is going on. My goal is to be able to use just wifi without ethernet pluged in. Anyone has any solution to this problem? Thanks.

Uboot install on PogoplugPro V3 question (1 reply)

Hello. I just picked up a Pogoplug Pro that is still stock. I'm wanting to set up the Bodhi uboot and rootfs. I'm following https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,16017 and it says /proc/mtd should look like this:

Quote

dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 00e00000 00020000 "boot"
mtd1: 07200000 00020000 "data"

However, mine looks like this:

Quote

root@PogoplugPro:/tmp# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 08000000 00020000 "NAND 128MiB 3,3V 8-bit"
mtd1: 00e00000 00020000 "boot"
mtd2: 07200000 00020000 "rootfs"

I remember on my Pogoplug V4 this is set with the mtdparts env variable, but there is no mtdparts variable on this V3 pogoplug.

How do I fix this on a PogoplugPro V3?

The issue described here came back also with my new usb flash drive!

Furthermore, now NAS is connected to an UPS to avoid voltage breaks or overshoots.

Using netconsole I found out kernel correctly boots up, but the NAS doesn't answer to ping neither smb or ssh connection work.
Accessing the usb flash by my linux laptop I can see last log.
This is in /var/log/dmesg:

Using GPIO on pogoplug with the DHT022 to measure temperature (3 replies)

I have been testing the temperature sensor DHT022 with the 40-pin GPIO of a raspberry pi and it is working wonderfully. Now I am trying to see if the same thing can be done with a pogoplug or a dockstar. The sensor essentially uses 3 pins: a 3.3V, a ground and a output data (I believe it is binary). Just wondering if this is at all possible with the pogoplug?

Thank you.

Pogoplug Series 4 V4-A03-01 PreInternet new uboot + dumb dumb = Kernel Panic (2 replies)

Hello,
I picked up a new old stock Pogoplug Series 4 (V4-A03-01) recently after coming across this hackaday article.
I then watched the youtube uploads from Films by Kris.
This then lead me to Kris's "show notes" he posted on paste bin.
Hopefully adding the links and keywords will help others find this.

These are the commands I tried while following Kris's example (copied from pastebin):
Quote

#connect
screen /dev/ttyUSB0 115200,cs8,-parenb,-cstopb,-hupcl
#list partition
cat /proc/partitions
cat /proc/mtd
#remount / (root) as read/write
mount -o remount,rw /
#change root password
passwd root
#start telnetd or ssh server (both are already there)
#startup script can be found here
#(might want to enable dropbear and telnet and disable pogo services 'hbmgr.sh'):
vi /etc/init.d/rcS
#mount sdcard
mkdir /mnt/sdcard
mknod /dev/mmcblk0 b 179 0
mknod /dev/mmcblk0p1 b 179 1
mount /dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/sdcard
#mount USB drive
mkdir /mnt/usb
mknod /dev/sda b 8 0
mknod /dev/sda1 b 8 1
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb
#add these lines to /etc/fstab
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb vfat defaults 0 0
/dev/mmcblk0p1 /mnt/sdcard vfat defaults 0 0
The busybox install looked straight forward. I used an USB drive to transfer the busybox binary and everything seemed to be working. With the new busybox binary mounted to /tmp, I tested several new commands and everything seemed to work. So I copied /bin/busybox to a USB drive, and replaced the original binary with the new one. Kris lists the command he used to link everything on PB:
Quote

busybox --list|while read c;do echo $c;ln -s /bin/busybox $c;done
This is where things went south for me. I got a bunch of warnings about each command with a message (IIRC) calling something about each one illegal. This ended with an infinitely repeating "#" prompt. I let it sit for a few hours, but nothing changed and not knowing what else to do, I rebooted, then got kernel panic (my bootlog is attached to this post along with results of several other uboot commands and the kwboot versions too).

Questions:
Why does does my original Pogoplug printenv look so much different than the others I've seen posted here?
The lines with tabs seem to be unusual:

I thought I would check in and see what the more experienced people here thought I should do next. This device has never had ethernet connected. Is there a copy of the complete stock pre-internet connected image somewhere already?
Is it possible to recover the original OS at this point? Do I dump the NAND with the original memory display command in uboot, decompress it somehow and try to modify it, or is there some other way to recover?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
-Jake

Restating questions for easier unpacking:
1. Why does does my original Pogoplug printenv look so much different than the others I've seen posted here?
2. Is there a copy of this stock pre-internet-connected image somewhere already?
3. Is it possible to recover the original OS at this point?
4. Do I dump the NAND with the original memory display command in uboot, decompress it somehow and try to modify it, or is there some other way to recover?
+5. What other questions should I be asking in order to learn more about embedded Linux and apply this experience to other devices?

Need default /lib contents for Netgear Stora MS2110 (no replies)

Greetings. I have a 10-year-old Netgear Stora that I've been working to extend the useful life of recently.

One of the things I've been attempting to do is update the firmware to hbs-5044, which is the last official version released for the Stora (mine is currently running hbs-5043). I managed to find it on the Wayback Machine, and was following the "Manual firmware update" instructions given on the GitHub OpenStora archive, since the Stora is no longer able to automatically download the update (the servers have long been shut down, thus why I had to get it from the Wayback Machine).

Now, I need to say right off that...I am relatively inexperienced with Linux. Smartphone aside, 99% of my computer time is spent on Windows. So, I'm not quite (yet) accustomed to how stuff functions on the Linux side of things. That said, I kinda...er...messed my Stora up. Really badly. I accidentally hosed the /lib directory, and now it won't boot.

How did I get myself into this mess? Well...while I was attempting to manually install the updated firmware, it kept failing and giving error messages about missing libraries. So, like the inexperienced Linux noob I am, I thought "oh, I'll just grab the files it says are missing from a different ARM package". So, I started doing this, one file at a time. Every time, it would progress a little further, but then complain about a different missing library.

So, I got lazy...and proceeded to copy the entire contents of /lib from that other ARM package into the /lib directory on my Stora, not realizing that Linux doesn't ask if you want to overwrite any files that already exist. So, I'm thinking it replaced one or more files in /lib that the Stora needs to boot, and now...it's dead, Jim. It gets partway into the boot, but then freezes. Here's the boot log:

   >> This is the point at which it freezes <<

Ok, then! Time to try to recover from this mess. Despite my inexperience with Linux, I managed to figure out how to access UBoot via serial, cobble together a functional Debian boot USB that works on the Stora, and I also figured out how to access the contents of the NAND from Debian. So, I have the ability to potentially fix this problem. All I need now is the original contents of /lib, so I can put it back the way it belongs.

Would anyone happen to be able to provide me with the contents of /lib from your stock Stora, please? Or, know of someplace where I would be able to get it?

Thank you for your assistance, and please forgive my Linux ignorance.
