Hello, guys!
This is my first post here, so I want to say hello to everybody involved ;-)
I've been reading the forum for some years - information found here helped me unlocking and restoring my old Stora NAS - thank You!
Some time ago I've been given Netgear ReadyNAS NVX with a broken power supply and decided to bring it to life. I didn't like the OS provide by Netgear, so I built something similar to Your ideas - OS booting to RAM, no part of the OS stored on the persistent storage (except without special intention).
If someone is interested in it I will share my experiences.
I know it's quite different architecture, but who knows..

PS.
I'm from Poland, the word "gimbus" in urban polish means a very young teenager.. But I'm.. let's say..a bit older ;-)
Regards again

LEDs on NSA325v2 (2 replies)

Hello,

I am running Debian with 5.2.9 kirkwood kernel on my device which I installed from this awesome website. I was wondering if there is any way to interact with the LEDs and speaker on the device (e.g. I want my sata1/sata2 leds turn red and play a beep sound when there is a disk failure -> mdadm detects a degraded array). I found some files in /sys/class/leds but tbh I dont really know how to continue from there. Can I just set the value in the brightness file to max (255) ?

For the beeping,I tried the "beep" package but it does not produce any sound.

I dont want to break anything so I figured it is better to ask here first.

Pogo plug v3 stalls at usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 2 using oxnas-ehci (6 replies)

hello all -

long time lurker here and have been able to resolve any issue prior to this one. I recently bought a Pogo-P21 via ebay and was looking to add it to a list of Debian based servers for small jobs around my house. I have 2 E02's (black) that run Debian Buster without any issue.

Unfortunately I can't seem to get this P21 to boot fully into Debian. I think I am close but the console hangs at the "usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 2 using oxnas-ehci" line (see log). I've tried different usb drives and different ports but get the same issue all the time. I have a serial connection to the device and I can see it asks for and gets and IP address from my DHCP server but can't seem get past this point.

I've attached my console log and did some research on the "** File not found /boot/uEnv.txt *" error that I do see but thought it may not critical from the posting here at Apr 24, 2020 at 4:40 from Bodhi https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,100274 .

I've also included the output from printenv from the console when I interrupted the boot process for more detail.

I'm still looking around but thought I'd ask some experts - thanks!!

help flashing u-boot onto ix4-200d NAND (11 replies)

Hello,

i have bought a faulty iomega ix4-200d which got the NAND flash erased. long story short, following this topic https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,25120 I have now fully working iomega ix4-200d grandpa. Problem was, that SHEEVAPLUG U-Boot could not be booted off the flash and the mtd0.bin file I have found in that thread did not recognize USB devices, so current status is:

kernel: Linux iomega 5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1 #1 PREEMPT Sat Aug 17 15:00:56 PDT 2019 armv5tel GNU/Linux
rootfs: Debian-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
dtb: kirkwood-iomega_ix4_200d.dtb (DTB file embedded in the kernel image)

the only option that worked for me was kernel + initrd are stored in 32MB NAND just after u-boot, I can post details if needed. RootFS is on the first SATA disk on first ext2 partition labeled as rootfs.

My problem (i knew it has to come but did not expect that early) is that the initrd image does not contain for example e2fsck or fuse. apt-get tries to generate new initrd image but that is being ignored because my NAS is booting kernel and ramdisk from NAND.

I have tried to replace ramdisk in NAND with the one generated by apt, but got "Bad magic number"

I'm not a master in linux, I'm happy to get this far, but is there anyone who could help me with following?

WHAT I NEED IS: I would like to get u-boot to boot Kernel and Ramdisk from either SATA disk or USB storage and not NAND, because I would like to update the kernel. . Sheevaplug u-boot loaded from UART works perfectly. But when flashed to NAND the box hangs right after power-on with no output on UART. Seems it does not find u-boot in NAND even when I used the same address to flash it.

would be anyone so kind and go through this nightmare with me?

I have the NAS attached on UART and can do kwboot and tftp, that's how I managed to get it working.

thanks
martin

Pogoplug Mobile Blinking Green (10 replies)

I have a Pogoplug Mobile that was flashed with Uboot 2017.07. It's running Debian 9 with the 5.8.3 kernel. I can boot it with no problem. Light goes solid green in under a minute, and can log in soon after.

So, I sent it to another guy who says it never goes past blinking green. I read a post that netconsole can cause this if serverip isn't active when it comes up, although it does have the updated preboot_nc which I thought fixed that problem, i.e. this

preboot_nc=setenv nc_ready 0; for pingstat in 1 2 3 4 5; do; sleep 1; if run if_netconsole; then setenv nc_ready 1; fi; done; if test $nc_ready -eq 1; then run start_netconsole; fi

But the strange thing is, he can boot it to solid green without Ethernet connected to his network. But when he then plugs in the Ethernet cable, it switches from solid green to blinking green, and he can't see it on his router. He checked the cable and Ethernet port on the router and they work fine with another device (PC), and he does have DHCP enabled on his router.

What condition would cause it to go blinking green when you plug in Ethernet? I'm thinking it's not netconsole because the box is already completely booted up, so well past preboot when Ethernet gets plugged in.

Any thoughts?

Cleanup Excess File in iConnect /boot Directory? (2 replies)

I've recently installed the newest kernel on a USB booting iConnect using the instructions found here on this forum. Everything went well and it's working great. I have quite a mess of excess files left in the /boot folder now. What are the minimum required files to have there for booting and ease of future kernel updates?

I'd like to keep as clean as possible.

Here is the current content of my /boot folder:

GoFlexHome, flashed u-Boot, but envs flash failed - now what? (4 replies)

Hello,

first of all thanks for all the great input and learnings I got from this forum. It's fun playing around with these Kirkwood devices.

Now to my question: I got a GoFlexHome for cheap and started to make it useful by installing a more recent u-Boot version as described bodhi's instructions here:
https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,12381

I had finished step 7 and had flashed mtd0 without trouble. But for some reason, the GoFlexHome lost power before I could do step 8 and flash the u-Boot envs. Now the device is in a boot loop.

Without the envs in place, is it possible to make the device boot a system which will let me access it via ssh? Can I prepare a USB stick or a SATA drive?
Or do I have to do it the hard, i.e. the serial connection way?

Thanks for any help,
Christoph

First of all I'm new to this and have a second-hand NAS, so I'm pretty sure I've missed something.

I'm booting from USB, with the 5.2.9 kernel. The boot looks like this:
NSA325> reset

The old kernel version is still running after update (6 replies)

Hello,
I have a Netgear Stora with debian 10.8 and 5.9.3-kirkwood-tld-1 kernel.

I have never had problems updating the kernel so far but ... I can no longer update the 5.9.3 kernel to the newer versions (5.9.12 and 5.10.7).
Here is the usual procedure that I normally use:

# cd /boot

# wget --no-check-certificate https://www.dropbox.com/s/drui4fx7npx8acc/linux-5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2
# md5sum linux-5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2

# tar -xjf linux-5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1-bodhi.tar.bz2
# tar -xf linux-dtb-5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1.tar

# dpkg -i linux-image-5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1_1.0_armel.deb
# mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1 -d vmlinuz-5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1 uImage
# mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x00000000 -e 0x00000000 -n initramfs-5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1 -d initrd.img-5.9.12-kirkwood-tld-1 uInitrd

# sync
# sync
# sync
# shutdown -r now

# uname -r
5.9.3-kirkwood-tld-1

there were no errors, the kernel just remains the same.
Thanks.

Hi all! Maybe you can hrlp me.

I try install OpenWrt on my Stora. Use insruction from wiki https://openwrt.org/inbox/toh/netgear/netgear_stora Use files from Energoblock in this topic https://forum.openwrt.org/t/netgear-stora-ms-2000-openwrt-18-06-4/42104/10.

Uboot write is correct. But when I try boot uImage I have a error:

PopoPlug Memory Limitations on Upgrading (8 replies)

Hi bodhi,

Are there practical limits on these upgrades for things like the PopoPlug E04 due to the memory size?

When I go through the forum posts, memory issues never seem to be mentioned, as though it's never an issue. However, I see on this device, even with a swap file, that all the memory is consumed on some occasions.

A typical example, even after enabling a swapfile and moving /var/log to /tmp/var/log the device is freezing during package upgrades, an example is shown below at the worst possible time:
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
Processing triggers for man-db (2.8.5-2) ...
Processing triggers for dbus (1.12.20-0+deb10u1) ...
Processing triggers for libc-bin (2.28-10) ...
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.133+deb10u1) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.2.9-kirkwood-tld-1

As you can see, it's actually frozen during the boot image creation, unfortunately, it's hung at this point so I'm going to have to kill it.

Pogoplug e02 boot into rescue:~# after login, please help to reinstall debian (8 replies)

hi, I have a pogoplug e02 that had debian installed. But the flash drive was dead. I was thinking to reinstall debian by following the Pogoplug E02 Debian Linux Installation Guide. without usb attached, the Pogoplug E02 boot into "rescue:~# " after I type in root/root (user/password).
it's like this:
rescue:~#

As an linux newbie, I have been puzzled by "rescue:~# " for a long time. I was stuck and don't know what to do. Please help me out. BTW, I tried to ignore the "rescue:~# " thing and install the uboot. But I run into the following error message.

Please help me out, bodhi. I want to get out of "rescue:~# " and boot into "root:~# " after I input the user/password and re-install debian by following debian pogoplug installation guide.

Thanks

stora MS2000 uboot4 no hdd boot without usb (2 replies)

ok, so finally got this bugger purring like a kitten but now im at the final steps of moving the rootfs from usb to HDD.

Ive tried the method with changing the LABEL and that works fine for the filesystem, but not so good for the bootloader.

I cannot boot without USB attached.

i was fighting with the variables: devices / device / rootpath, but it does not make sense.

I think it cant find /dev/md0p2 but using /dev/sda1 wasnt working anyway..

i was just trying to connect the hdd with the LABEL var as the rootFS. But it seems it always MUST load Uimage and Uinitrd from usb.

Any suggestions? i might be just overlooking one small thing after 4 days of trying.

Also i want to setup netconsole next to booting process just so i can monitor, but im still kindof learning the uboot environment variables.

Build Gerbera V1.6.4 for Pogo 2/4 Armel Architecture (no replies)

I started working on PogoPlugs last year to sharpen my Unix skills and to get some very power/space/simple NAS and media servers onto my home network. I have managed to hack into every pogo version now thanks to the help of people here and now I have managed to get a decent Media server running and I thought I would share my tips with you all because I found the information I needed to do it not very obvious or easy. While I may not have done some of these stages optimally, it has worked.

So here is my guide to building Gerbera 1.6.4. on Pogo Kirkwood Armel architecture boxes running Debian buster. The process is very similar to the UBUNTU guide but you need a few tweaks.

1) You WILL need a swapfile when using 128Mb devices (and probably 256MB too). Add a HD or SSD but not a USB stick because of the risk of hardware failure.

2) I opted for libnpupnp and libupnpp6 from https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/upmpdcli/ - Follow the build instructions to create Debian packages which you can then install with dpkg.

3) Build the latest Taglib [cmake, make -j4] and use 'Make Install' to install

4) Use Apt-get to install the rest of the dev packages as per dependencies list. It is best to load fmtlib-dev and libspdlog.dev from the Buster Backports

5) Clone the Gerbera git and edit the CMakeLists.txt file and comment the original version and add the new.

# set(GERBERA_VERSION "git")
set(GERBERA_VERSION "1.6.4-185-gae283931+d")

and add these lines to make the debian package

SET(CPACK_GENERATOR "DEB")
SET(CPACK_DEBIAN_PACKAGE_MAINTAINER "KK")
# include (cmake)
include(packaging)

6) This is my Cmake command:

Cmake Command - cmake -g DEB ../gerbera -DWITH_NPUPNP=YES -DWITH_JS=1 -DWITH_MYSQL=1 -DWITH_CURL=1 -DWITH_TAGLIB=1 -DWITH_MAGIC=1 -DWITH_MATROSKA=0 -DWITH_AVCODEC=1 -DWITH_EXIF=1 -DWITH_EXIV2=0 -DWITH_LASTFM=0 -DWITH_FFMPEGTHUMBNAILER=1 -DWITH_INOTIFY=1

Resolve any dependency issues now!

7) the 'make -j4' will take at least 6 hours - go for a walk, read a book, grab some sleep .....

cpack -G DEB will create a debian package file - All being well - no errors. Use dpkg to install.

8) follow the gerbera manual for installation. Create the gerbera user (give the user a home directory e.g. /home/gerbera). Make the /etc/gerbera folder and get the config.xml. Symbolic link the config file:

ln -s /etc/gerbera/config.xml /home/gerbera/.config/gerbera

Symbolic link the web directory:

ln -s /usr/share/gerbera /usr/local/share

9) edit config.xml and change the path to

<home>/home/gerbera/.config/gerbera</home>

10) Start gerbera with the standard launch command. The server should start - watch the messages for errors. Check the web interface functions too. when happy that all is good - control-c to get back to shell

gerbera -c /etc/gerbera/config.xml

11) for SystemD users, copy the gerbera.service script into /usr/systemd/system and edit it to correct the path to the gerbera server the use the systemctl command as per the manual to start and stop the server and debug any problems.

ExecStart=/usr/bin/gerbera -c /etc/gerbera/config.xml

12) for init.d users, you need a gerbera script which I took from the earlier version which is in the Debian APT library

13 You need to put your new gerbera package on hold to prevent apt-get upgrade downgrading back to 1.1

apt-mark hold gerbera

That should be everything you need. I have this Gerbera version running on a PogoPlug V2E02 and a V4 Pro quite happily using vlc and bubbleupnp as clients and casting on to a fire stick and chromecast devices.

Hope that helps someone - Bob
